INVITATION
Engineering for the design of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) or Tailings Facilities is a
topic that is increasingly important worldwide due to the growing interest of stakeholders
(mining companies, professionals, authorities, communities) in ensuring
reliable projects that minimize the risk of failure and guarantee safe operation throughout the
life cycle of these types of works. Therefore, the Mexican Society of Geotechnical Engineering
has decided to organize the 1st
International Symposium on Tailings Deposits, which will be held in the city of Chihuahua,
Chihuahua, Mexico from March 13 to 15, 2024. The event will be co-sponsored by the Technical
Committee TC 221 Tailings and Mine and
Wastes of ISSMGE. It will be the first symposium of its kind to be held in the country and aims
to disseminate the state-of-the-art and best practices on the planning, design, construction,
and operation of tailings deposits
in their diferent stages of the life cycle, with a special focus on risk analysis and
management. The technical program includes keynote lectures by renowned experts in the field, as
well as sessions in which accepted papers
will be presented by their authors. The city of Chihuahua is the capital of the state of
Chihuahua in northwest Mexico. It is one of the most thriving cities in the country, with a
great industrial and commercial activity and
the operations center of many mining-related companies. The city also houses the eastern
terminus of the Chepe railroad, which runs through the green-tinted canyons of the Copper Canyon
area. On behalf of the organizers, we
extend a cordial invitation to the national and international technical community to present in
an open forum the most relevant aspects that must be taken into account to ensure that tailings
deposit projects become increasingly
sustainable and reliable and throughout their life cycle.
